The North Yorkshire village of Sand Hutton lies in the Ryedale district of the county just 6 miles north east of York and a short distance from Thirsk. The village has a rich history, being recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Hottune. The Manor of Sand Hutton has been passed down through a number of important people over the years after initially being owned by the Crown. One key owner was Sir Robert Walker who built his own railway in the grounds to transport him around his vast estate. In the mid-1800s the village held its own race meeting on Tuesday 30th March 1841, although the card consisted of one Sweepstake over 3 miles. After a thrilling race Mr Jordeson’s four year old Creeping Jane was the winner when ridden by Atkinson. There are no further records of races taking place in the village. |
